Our Controller Bart
This month we are putting a colleague in the spotlight who is not only sharp with numbers, but also clearly knows what really matters in his life: family, having fun, and growing together. The workday starts practically: first filling a water bottle, then the occasional cup of coffee. Simple, effective, and ready to go. That actually characterizes Bart quite well: down-to-earth and always well prepared.
Who are you outside of Van Abeelen?
Outside of work, everything is about family and enjoyment.
He lives with his daughter Kristel (14) and son Nolan (11) (shared custody). Since October 2025, dog Luna has joined them. In addition, there is his girlfriend Evi, who also has two children: Veerle (14) and Thijmen (11). A lovely blended family, therefore, where it is never quiet.
Free time mostly means: football, holidays, and quality time with the family. Saturday? That is just football all day long. Besides that, he loves doing fun things together: going to the movies or out to dinner.
From business controller to trusted face at Van Abeelen
The current position is not new to Bart. In the past, he also fulfilled this role. Before that, he worked as a business controller at a large international organization. That background is reflected in his analytical perspective and feel for numbers.
He has been working at Van Abeelen since June 2024. Almost two years now, during which time he has clearly developed.
A festive entrance
One moment really stands out: the 30th anniversary party in July 2024. Not only a wonderful celebration with the entire team, but also special because he had just started back then. Immediately being part of such a milestone instantly gives a sense of connection.
Growth, both professional and personal
On a professional level, clear growth is visible. More proficiency in Excel, working with Syntess and Power BI, and above all: solving questions faster and better. Although Bart mentions that wanting to solve everything well and quickly is his pitfall.
That self-insight is important, because growing does not only mean being able to do more, but also learning to pace oneself.
Work atmosphere: serious work, laughing together
The atmosphere with colleagues is described as very good. The Friday afternoon drink is a fixed event and he tries to attend as much as possible. Between the serious work, there is always room for a joke.
What are you most proud of?
Without a doubt: his children.
Professionally, he is proud of the WIP reporting. Those kinds of concrete results show what you add.
