Fruit grower Olaf van der Lienden from Herveld encountered a leak in an existing cooling system from 1984. The system was still operating with a synthetic refrigerant. Refilling was possible, but would not be a structural solution in the long term.
Therefore, Van der Lienden chose to replace him with a new one. CO₂ transcritical cooling system. A significant step, but a forward-looking choice for reliable and more environmentally friendly apple storage.
New cooling system within a tight schedule
The planning was meticulous. On September 1, Van Abeelen Koudetechniek began the installation. On September 24, the work was complete, and on September 25 the apples were able to start cooling. This required meticulous preparation, good coordination, and technicians who know what needs to be done on-site.

Natural refrigerants as a future-oriented choice
By choosing CO₂, Van der Lienden is less dependent on synthetic refrigerants. This is in line with the development in the market, where refrigerants with a high GWP are being phased out increasingly.
The installation can also be monitored remotely and adjusted as needed. This provides additional certainty during the storage season, when temperature control directly affects the quality of the harvest.
Also switching to natural refrigerants?
Van Abeelen Koudetechniek helps companies replace, design and maintain cooling systems using natural refrigerants such as CO₂, NH₃ and propane.
