Fruit grower Olaf van der Lienden from Herveld had to deal with a leak in an existing refrigeration system from 1984. The system was still running on a synthetic refrigerant. Refilling was possible, but would not be a structural long-term solution.
That is why Van der Lienden opted to replace it with a new one CO2-transcritical refrigeration system. A major step, but a forward-looking choice for reliable and more environmentally friendly apple storage.
New cooling installation within a tight schedule
The schedule was tight. On September 1st, Van Abeelen Koudetechniek started the installation. On September 24th, the work was completed, and on September 25th, the apples could go into cold storage. That required careful preparation, good coordination, and technicians who know what needs to be done on site.

Natural refrigerants as a forward-looking choice
By choosing CO₂, Van der Lienden is less dependent on synthetic refrigerants. This aligns with market developments in which refrigerants with a high GWP are increasingly being phased out.
Furthermore, the system can be monitored remotely and adjusted where necessary. This provides extra security during the storage season, when temperature control has a direct impact on the quality of the harvest.
